What Values Actually Steer Your Corporate Culture?

A common exercise in organizational life is defining and promoting corporate values. Among other things, values are important because they are such a shaping influence on the culture of your organization.

But are the values which you espouse the ones which are in truth guiding your corporate culture? Often they are not.

One way to determine the values which are actually steering your culture is to notice who is celebrated as heroes in the organization and why they are singled out for celebration. That why points to the true values which shape your organization.

It doesn't matter what your published and espoused values are, your people will conclude that your real values are the ones behind your hero stories.
